Week 1 - Signs & Visual Communications, Part 1

(1) Defining terms related to concepts in Visual Communication; for each term do the following:

(2)  Research the following background details of each symbol.  

• The dog on a leash means that you must have a dog on the leash at all times and you'll find these signs at parks or anywhere where theres kids around.
• The symbol with a man and woman means restrooms for both genders and you'll find this in areas with public restrooms.
• The lodging symbol means over night accommodations (hotel, lodge, motel, etc. you'll find these in camping areas.
• The big P means no parking or parking and you'll find this in areas that have parking lots.
• The trail shelter means that the trail will lead you to a shelter that will protect you from the weather. You'll find this symbol at camping grounds or national parks
• Airport or landing strip, located at airports.
• Picnic area, people will know that the area is for picnics, located at parks.
• Gas station or gas dock people will know where to fill up for gas located at gas stations.
• The cup of water means there is drinking water in that area, people will see the sign and know that drinking water is available and these signs will be located at national parks.
• The phone symbol means there is a public telephone available and its located anywhere a telephone is located. 
• The mail symbol means post office and people will receive & send mail at the post office this is located at cities, towns, and throughout the world.
• The food symbol represents a grocery store or camp store and is located at national parks.
• The + symbolizes a first aid and people will see this everywhere just in case if its an emergency.

(3) AMERICAN FLAG

• The 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 states of the United States of America and the 13 stripes represent the thirteen British colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain and became the first states in the Union.
